Snow Days

1970 in Santa Clara, California

Ohhh, the day it snowed!

(Although in truth this was probably more hail than snow!)

It didn't last long, and it wasn't much

but enough to get a feel for what it's about!

Look how small the magnolia tree was!!

Here's the backyard, bare leaves in winter

before the family room was built

All the neighboring trees were small as well!

There's a hedge planted at the edge of the grass

The master bedroom wall on the right has such a small window!

And everyone had TV antennas - Before cable and the internet!!
I remember when Dad would climb on the roof and adjust the antenna,
Mom would stare at the TV, one of us kids would stand at the open door
so we could shout instructions to Dad:  "Yep, that's perfect, Dad!"

Nothing better than family together

Oliver, Dorothy, Margie, Jim

I wonder who snapped the pic?

When extra family is around, it's time to figure out

how to keep idle hands busy ---

How about some yardwork, then we'll pour cement!

 

Here it comes, fill that wheel barrow!

Along the side of the garage, 

Oliver and Jim busy laying it down, smoothing it out.

A really great fix to this little piece of side yard.

At the end of the day, a round of cards!
I thought we always played Rack-O

but stacks of chips, looks like we're playing Blackjack!

And on the table, a hairpiece getting curlers installed

must be Sunday tomorrow!

Christmas Dinner around the table

Mom's china, the Bob Liden family is here

and so are the Gowan's!

With everyone visiting, we did a bunch of tourist-y things:

a walk on the beach

Visiting the Golden Gate Bridge

(and check out the old cars!)

and the San Francisco Zoo!

My one very vivid memory was Auntie LaLa (Gowan)

saw a couple of hippie bikers, and asked if she could take their picture.

In those days, the Hell's Angels were all over the news

and I was SO impressed at her gumption to ask them!

They refused, of course.  hehehe
